Reduced Gravity, Low Fat

Students analyzed the fat content and formulated a balanced meal by applying the information on fat content of food.
The first day , they made an emulsion of a fast food meal ( a hamburger and French fries ). Once they blended the meal, they added 2/3 of water into the 1/3 of the mixed meal. Then, they put it in the microwave oven for 15 minutes and after it cooled down, they put it in the freezer for 1 day.
The next day the team observed that the layer of fat moved to the top of the emulsion. With a marker they marked it and calculated that it was about 0.8 cm.
Using the Food Guide Pyramid, students compared the ingredients of a fast food meal ( hamburger and French fries) and observed if this is healthy enough.
They discussed about a balanced diet and that it should provide the appropriate amount of energy and adequate amounts of water.
They drew healthy meals and got informed about an astronaut’s diet in space.
