  • End Effectors in Battle Creek MI!

    NWMS end effector

7th graders at Northwestern Middle School learned about the importance of robotics aboard the ISS. Many students tried their hand at picking up a ping pong ball and eraser with chopsticks and all agreed a more sound mechanical hand was needed to grapple objects in space. Mission question: Can we design a robotic hand to grab objects that won't slip out of grasp? We watched the Mission X video explaining the end effector and proceeded to make our own with Styrofoam cups and string. Students reported in their journals what strategies they used and whether they needed to redesign their efforts.

  • Speed of Light - NWMS Battle Creek MI

    NWMS Speed of Light

After watching a video about living aboard the ISS, Northwestern Middle School 7th graders learned why reaction time and hand-eye coordination is vital to astronaut training. We paired up and took our reaction time measurements with rulers, did 20 jumping jacks and measured again. Would increased heart rates improve our scores? With fluctuating data, we discussed and wrote in journals what factors and stimuli affect our own coordination and how to improve.

  • Hydration Station - Battle Creek MI

    Hydration Station

For week 2, Northwestern Middle School 7th graders learned why hydration is so important for astronauts. We focused on glossary words, and groups answered questions in their journals after gathering information from YouTube and the hydration web. After developing a research question/problem statement, the students had a lot of fun with the urine simulation. Seeing different levels of hydration prompted more journal entries. They have a clear understanding of why we must hydrate our bodies, what signs to look for when dehydration sets in, and what we must do to balance levels in our own bodies.

  • Day 1 in Battle Creek, Michigan - NASA Intro & Journal Writing

    Mission X notebooks

Northwestern Middle School 7th graders learned about NASA, their missions and staff. With a Mission X introduction and welcome video, we discussed what an astronaut must do to train mentally and physically. They then learned the importance of journal writing for scientists (NASA e-clips video) and started with a journal entry in their new notebooks listing goals for personal health as we move forward with our own classroom missions.

  • Excited to the "Core" to train like an astronuat!

Our students began our astronaut training. We are super excited to learn about space and the importance of being physically fit. The plank is no joke! lol
We will get stronger day by day! Love this program.
