Frequently Asked Questions

General

Mission X is a free educational project that challenges students to train like astronauts through physical exercises and scientific investigations. It helps students learn how to stay fit and healthy in space and on Earth. Aimed at young people (up to 14 years old), it is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the UK Space Agency (UKSA), and facilitated by European Space Education Resource Offices (ESEROs) and volunteer National Organisers. Since its inception by NASA in 2011, Mission X has engaged over half a million students worldwide.

In the Walk to the Moon Challenge, teams of students can complete the Mission X activities and submit them on the website to earn steps. Steps earned by all of the teams across the world help our mascots, Luna and Leo, walk 384 400 km – the distance from Earth to the Moon!

The 2024-2025 Walk to the Moon Challenge takes place 11 September 2024 – 11 August 2025. See the full timeline here.

Team Leaders may still register, download, and complete the Mission X activities outside of the challenge to suit their timetable. However, activities can not be submitted and steps can not be earned outside of the Walk to the Moon Challenge window.

The challenge is designed to be completed in 6 weeks, but it can be adapted.

  • Mission X activities are developed for young people up to 14 years old, but can be adapted by Team Leaders for other age groups and skill levels.
  • Participation of teams of students is recommended.  While there is no minimum or maximum number of team members required to participate, students are encouraged to work with at least 1 other person. Each team must be supported by a Team Leader (teacher, mentor, educator, or parent).
  • Mission X is open worldwide.

Yes! Team Leaders are welcome to adapt the Mission X activities to suit the age and skill level of their team members.

Yes! Please use the language dropdown menu at the top right corner of our webpage to automatically change the website (and all of the files* you download from the site) into your language of choice.

*If a file is not available in the language selected, it will download in English.

Team Leaders

A Team Leader must be a teacher, mentor, educator, or parent, over the age of 18. To create a Team Leader account, sign-up here.

Yes! Team Leaders can register multiple teams. Once you create a Team Leader account and login, you will be able to register new teams on your Team Leader Dashboard.

Due to an update in our Privacy Policy, all Team Leader accounts created before September 2022 that did not accept our new policy by the end of 2022 have been deactivated. To participate in Mission X 2024-2025 you will need to sign-up for a new Team Leader account.

National Organisers

National Organisers and their partners help facilitate the Mission X project in each participating country by providing local support. If your country is an official participant in Mission X 2024-2025, you can find your National Organiser and their contact details by selecting your country in the Countries section of the menu bar at the top of this page.

Yes, you can still take part in the challenge! If your country does not have a National Organiser, your registration will be managed by our UK National Organiser.

Activities

The Mission X activities are accessible through the Activities page in the menu bar. Using the tags at the top of the page, you can filter by type, theme, skill or the value of the activity for earning steps. Activities can be viewed and downloaded individually from each activity page, or you can download the entire catalogue at once by clicking the “Download all activities” button at the bottom of the Activities page.

The Mission X activities are comprised of:

  • Physical Activities: hands-on training missions target strength, endurance, coordination, balance, and spatial awareness, utilising the same body parts as astronauts. Suitable for individual students or classroom settings, each activity includes a mission briefing, assignment, purpose, vocabulary, related facts, and safety guidelines. Activities can be practised simultaneously or one per week.

  • Science Activities: investigations focus on STEM subjects, enabling students to practise scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and teamwork. They cover principles and topics essential for astronauts to stay healthy in space and complete their missions. Suitable for individual students or classroom settings, each activity includes lesson objectives, background information, step-by-step teacher guides, student worksheets, and safety guidelines. Activities can be practised simultaneously or one per week.

  • National Activities: activities relating to training like an astronaut that can be found through National Organisers’ websites. These activities can be submitted as “Other Physical Activity” or “Other Science Activity” when submitting activities to earn steps in your account.

The Mission X Team works hard to make as many activities as possible available in multiple languages. If an activity is presently only in English, it will be stated on the activities’ page and it will appear in English if you use the “Download all activities” button.

To download activities in your native language, use the language dropdown menu at the top right corner of our webpage. This will automatically change the website and all files downloaded from the website into your language of choice.*

*If a file is not available in the language selected, it will download in English.

There is no minimum or maximum amount of activities that must be completed to participate in the challenge.

Nope! Unless your National Organiser has instructed that your country is completing specific activities only, you may complete whichever Mission X activities you wish. Throughout the challenge, you can complete as many or as little activities as you’d like, and you can even complete the same activity multiple times.

Earning Steps

Updated Step Calculator for 2024-2025

We’ve updated the Step Calculator for the 2024-2025 edition! Steps for each activity are now calculated using the following formula:

Number of Steps Achieved per Activity = Activity Factor × Number of Students,
with the Activity Factor set at 4,000 steps.

This update considers the average duration of activities (20-30 minutes) and typical student walking speeds (100-120 steps per minute), which would usually result in 2,000-3,000 steps. To account for the increased intensity of dynamic exercises like running or jumping, we’ve rounded up the factor to 4,000 steps. This adjustment ensures consistency and provides a motivational target, effectively supporting our mission goal of “reaching the Moon.” All activities, including scientific ones, are valued equally.

With an average human step size of 0.75 meters (0.00075 km) and the average Earth-Moon distance of 384,400 kilometers, students would collectively need approximately 512.5 million steps to cover this distance. By calculating steps per activity, larger student groups can reach the Moon more quickly.

You can use this opportunity to discuss with your students their step size and the Earth-Moon distance, and explore how many days (assuming 10,000 steps per day) it would take for a person to walk to the Moon or how many people’s annual steps it would take to reach the Moon.

You may submit activities as frequently or as infrequently as you’d like during the Walk to the Moon Challenge. Keep in mind that each activity needs to be submitted individually, so regular submissions (e.g. once per week) are advised.
